For handsets that qualify, Google has made the second beta upgrade to its most recent Android 14 operating system available. The Android 13 operating system, which was released last year, has remained relatively the same despite the new version's addition of a number of features.

Given that Google significantly updated Android 13 and added new functionality, this is not surprising. With Android 14, the software giant has instead concentrated on enhancing the Android experience.

Android 14: A Focus on Improving User Experience with New Features

  • Google has released the second beta update of Android 14 OS for eligible smartphones, with the new update being available to a broader set of audiences than the first beta release.
  • The Android 14 OS is not expected to be a significant upgrade over Android 13 but will focus on improving the Android experience for users.
  • The new Android version will bring features such as notification flash, a new privacy feature, app cloning, screen time tracking, and support for satellite connectivity, among others.

Android 14: A Focus on Improving User Experience with New Features

One of the standout features of Android 14 is its compatibility with a range of smartphones. Google's Pixel devices will be among the first to receive the latest update, including the recently launched Pixel 7a. The update will also be available for the Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6 series, Pixel 6, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 series, Pixel Fold and Pixel Pad.

Other Android phones compatible with the beta 2 update include the Vivo X90 Pro, iQOO 11, Lenovo Tab Extreme, OnePlus 11, Nothing Phone (1), Tecno Camon 20 series, Realme GT 2 Pro, Xiaomi 13 Pro, Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 12T, Xiaomi Pad 6, Oppo Find N2, and Oppo Find N2 Flip.

To download the Android 14 beta 2 version, Pixel users can head to the Android developer platform, while other Android phone users will be able to download the update from their respective company's website.

The new operating system will first be released in June this year for developers to test, with a stable version rolled out to everyone at a later date.

While Google hasn't revealed the exact launch date, it's expected to be similar to last year's Android 13 OS release, which was made available to the public in August.

One of the most noteworthy features of Android 14 is its notification flash feature, designed for people with hearing disabilities. The feature makes the smartphone flash when a notification is received.

The new version also includes a privacy feature, allowing users to restrict apps from accessing specific photos and videos they select. Another useful feature is the ability to disable animations when entering a PIN to unlock the phone.

Google will also integrate an app clone feature, which will make it easier for users to duplicate any app, regardless of whether their smartphone company offers it with a custom Android skin. Android 14 includes a screen time tracking feature that lets users check how long it's been since their device was last fully charged. This way, users can identify which apps are draining their battery and adjust accordingly.

Android 14 will also introduce support for satellite connectivity features similar to Apple's Emergency Services features with the iPhone 14 series. Another significant change is that the new version will block older Android apps from being installed when switching to a new phone.

This feature will only be available on devices that launch with Android 14, and abandoned older apps will not be shifted to new devices.

End Note

While the Android 14 operating system doesn't bring any major upgrades compared to Android 13, it does bring a range of new features designed to improve the user experience. With its compatibility with a range of smartphones and notable features such as notification flash and app cloning, Android 14 is set to be a significant update for Android users.
