Microsoft has updated the development environment for Windows 11 to version 22H2. It is a collection of Windows 11 virtual machines (VMWare, Hyper-V Gen2, VirtualBox, and Parallels) that are free to use for testing purposes while also enabling developers to create and test software in a secure environment.

 

Virtual machines running Windows 11 Enterprise 22H2 are now free to download and have a May 2023 expiration date. Following then, in order to keep using it, you will need to get a license. Developers can now download the latest official version of virtual machines from Microsoft for free to build and test applications for Windows 11. To make it a smooth journey, the company has bundled the following tools and applications in it:

  • Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition with UWP, .NET Desktop, Azure, and Windows App SDK for C# workloads enabled
  • Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 with Ubuntu installed
  • Windows Terminal installed
  • Developer mode enabled

 

 

These virtual machines are available for these four virtualization platforms: VMWare, Hyper-V, Virtual Box, and Parallels. You will need at least 21GB of free space to get started with any of the mentioned VMs.

 

It is worth noting that these Windows 11 virtual machines have an expiration date of . Till that time you can use these for FREE. After that, you will need a license to activate Windows 11 or download a fresh new VM published by the company.
