As part of the May 2021 Patch Tuesday cycle, Microsoft released a cumulative update KB5003173 for Windows 10 on May 11. This was a security update for Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004), Windows 10 October 2020 Update (version 20H2), and Windows 10 May 2021 Preview Update (version 21H1) with a few quality improvements.

 

But it turned out to have few users reporting an installation failure with the error code 0x800f0922. Now, it has been reported that few users started getting audio issues after upgrading their system to Windows 10 KB5003173 update.

 

Windows 10 KB5003173 update causing audio issues for some users

 

Some users have reported that they are having a high-pitched noise or squeak in certain apps after installing the latest cumulative update KB5003173 as part of the May 2021 Patch Tuesday cycle. This is being reported by users having 5.1 Dolby Digital audio playing on certain audio devices.

 

After installing this update, 5.1 Dolby Digital audio may play containing a high-pitched noise or squeak in certain apps when using certain audio devices and Windows settings., Microsoft said in the support document.

The company also provided the following suggestions in order to mitigate this issue:

  • Streaming the video or audio in a web browser or different app, instead of the app affected by this issue.
  • Enable Spatial sound settings by right-clicking or long-pressing on the volume icon in the notification area, selecting Spatial sound (Off), and selecting any of the available options.

 

Do note that the issue does not occur if you use stereo. The team said that they are working on a resolution and will provide an update in the upcoming release of Windows 10 updates.
