Microsoft expands the news and interests experience on the taskbar to a broader set of international markets

In early January 2021, Microsoft announced a brand new feature called "News and Interests" for Windows 10. The feature was first previewed with Windows 10 Preview Build 21286. As part of this update, Microsoft added quick access to an integrated feed of dynamic content, which includes news and weather updates that regularly updates throughout the day.

Later, in mid-January, Microsoft adds improvements to Windows 10's new taskbar experience with Windows 10 Preview Build 21292. With that build, it started providing you the real-time traffic conditions and alerts throughout the day. Along with this, the company also added a weather card that redirects you to a full-page view of the weather which includes the current temperature, wind, humidity level, and hourly predictions for the day, along with a 10-day forecast.

What's new in Windows 10 Preview Build 21313?

Till now, the "News and Interests" feature was limited to United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and India. With the latest Windows 10 Preview Build 21313, Microsoft is now expanding the feature to more international markets. It will now automatically detect your language and location, and deliver a localized experience from local publishers and data providers.

Microsoft said that the feature is currently not available to China, but they will soon make it available to the customers in that market.

To provide you a world-class performance, with more privacy, more productivity, and more value as you browse, Microsoft is now replacing the Microsoft Edge Legacy app. With the release of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21313, you will now see the new Microsoft Edge (Chromium), if you didn't yet replace it manually.

With this build, Microsoft is now modernizing the IME (Input Method Editor) for typing East Asian languages. From the feedback, received from the insiders, Microsoft is now releasing the next phase of improvements to the IME candidate window design. Microsoft said that the new candidate window will offer the followings:

  • A modern design – It is now more aligned with Microsoft's Fluent Design principles. It now includes an acrylic background, a new selection visual, and the dark theme support.

  • Optimized font size – Microsoft adjusted the font size in the Candidate Window UI to minimize the intrusiveness while securing visibility.

  • Quick access to emoji – Microsoft added direct access to the Emoji Panel via a button from the candidate window UI to help improve discoverability. We are still working to improve the experience of this button, Microsoft said.

  • Improved performance – The input is at the core of how you interact with your PC. So, Microsoft wanted to ensure you have the best possible experience as they roll out these changes.
