Cortana on Windows 10 gets new File skill in latest updates

Microsoft is still continuing its investment to improve the digital assistant Cortana on Windows 10. With the latest insider preview build in the Dev Channel, Microsoft previewed a new feature that will now help you to easily find and open your files. That means you don't have to directly navigate to the files by opening File Explorer.

The corporate users on the other hand can also search for files that are saved on SharePoint and OneDrive for Business if they have already signed into Cortana with their corporate credentials like Azure Active Directory (AAD).

The feature is currently available to English-speaking users in the US, and may soon roll out to other regions.

Here are a few commands that you can try out right now:

  • "Hey Cortana, open the marketing deck" to find by parts of file names.
  • "Hey Cortana, open the statistical document received from Anthony" to find the file by Author name.
  • "Hey Cortana, find my recent files" to find a document that you were editing recently.
  • "Hey Cortana, find my recent pdfs" to find a document of a particular type.
