Microsoft Edge got an experimental feature that will allow users to assign the Backspace key to navigate backward and forward while surfing the internet. The feature is currently available to Windows and Mac users running the Canary build of the Microsoft Edge browser.

As it is an experimental feature, you will need to enable it through a hidden flag. Continue reading further to know more about it.

Microsoft Edge brings back the old navigational shortcut as an experimental feature through a hidden flag

  • Microsoft Edge brings back the Backspace key for navigation.
  • You can press Backspace and Shift + Backspace to move backward and forward respectively.
  • The feature is currently available on Canary build.

Google Chrome already had the feature to allow users to navigate backward and forward using the shortcut key Backspace, but it was later replaced with Alt + Left Arrow and Alt + Right Arrow with Chrome version 52. Other browsers followed the same.

Now the software giant is bringing back the old feature, which will allow users to use Backspace and Shift + Backspace again. With the latest Microsoft Edge Canary build, you can enable this feature from the edge://flags page.

You can either navigate to edge://flags and search for "Assigns the Backspace key to go back a page" or directly navigate to the flag at edge://flags/#edge-backspace-key-navigate-page-back, and enable the feature from the associated dropdown.

It is very likely that the company will bring the feature to the stable version of Microsoft Edge, but it is not yet committed how this feature will be enabled by the user in the stable channel. We hope to see this feature come back to Chrome also in the near future.
