Microsoft released the first build of Windows 10 Version 20H2 to the insiders in the Beta channel (aka. the old Slow Ring). • The first preview build of Windows 10 20H2 is now available.
  • Only the seekers in Beta Channel will get this build via Windows Update.
  • The build will include the new Microsoft Edge, based on Chromium.

What's next for Windows 10 updates?

Windows 10 version 20H2 will offer a scoped set of features to improve performance and enhance quality. It will also be the first version of Windows 10 to include the new Microsoft Edge, based on Chromium. Later in the second half of 2020, it will be delivered in an optimized way for anyone running the Windows 10 May 2020 Update (also referred to as Windows 10, version 2004).

According to Microsoft:

We continue to learn and adjust the delivery and overall experience of the Windows Updates based on customer feedback. As a result, we will again deliver Windows 10, version 20H2 using servicing technology (like that used for the monthly update process) for customers running the May 2020 Update who choose to update to the new release. Simply put, anyone running the May 2020 Update and updating to Windows 10, version 20H2 will have a faster installation experience because the update will install like a monthly update.

Microsoft also said that they are changing the nomenclature of how the version number of Windows 10 is defined. Instead of a numeric version number, it will be represented as the half of the calendar year (such as "20H2") in which the release becomes available in retail and commercial channels but they will continue to use a friendly name, such as the May 2020 Update, in consumer communications.

Along with the announcement about how Microsoft is going to deliver the future updates, Microsoft also announced the release of first preview build 19042.330 to the insiders who are in the Beta Channel (Slow Ring). Recently, Microsoft announced that the Windows Insiders program is getting a makeover. If you didn't know about it yet, here's what's happening now.

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19042.330 (20H2) now rolling out to insiders in Beta Channel

If you are a Windows Insider in the Beta Channel (Slow Ring), you can seek to get this update by navigating to Settings | Update & Security | Windows Update and choose to download and install 20H2. Once you update your PC to 20H2, you will continue to automatically receive the new 20H2 updates through Windows Update using the Windows Update servicing technology.

A point to note that, Microsoft didn't announce any major new features in this build but it will include the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser, which will replace the legacy Microsoft Edge.

Also, Microsoft didn't commit when the next feature update (20H2) is going to hit the millions of users who are not part of the Windows Insiders program. But that's definitely sure that the update will rollout in the second-half of 2020.
