Google, on a blog post announced that they are bringing the password-less authentication to Google Chrome application on Android. Initially the feature will be restricted to few of their services on Pixel devices, but gradually will be available to others as well.

Password-less authentication comes to Google Chrome on Android

 

  • Google Chrome to support FIDO2 based secure authentication.
  • The feature is currently available to Pixel devices.
  • The phone should have Android 7.0 (Nougat) or later operating system.

Now Google added the ability to their Chrome browser based on the FIDO2 standards, W3C WebAuthn and FIDO CTAP (Client to Authenticator Protocol) that enables you to have a more secure authentication experiences by enabling the usage of biometrics on the web. If you met the prerequisite, you can now use your fingerprint or screen lock instead of a password when visiting certain Google services.

 

Prerequisites to have password-less authentication on Chrome

  • Your phone should have Android 7.0 (Nougat) or later.
  • Your personal Google Account should be added to your Android device.
  • Valid screen lock is set up on your Android device.
  • Currently the feature is supported only on Pixel devices.

 

How to try the password-less sign-in on Google Chrome?

  • Make sure that the Prerequisite has been met.
  • Open the Google Chrome on your Android device.
  • Now navigate to https://passwords.google.com on your Chrome browser.
  • Choose a site to view or manage a saved password.
  • Then follow the instructions to confirm that it’s you trying signing in.
