Windows 10 May 2019 Update, as the name suggests, Microsoft is going to release the next feature update (19H1) in the month of May 2019. If you are having Windows 10, a new support document warns that the update won't install if the system has external USB storage attached to it.

As the tech giant company already noticed an issue with drive reassignment, they have blocked the installation of the update to devices having external storage.

Windows 10 May 2019 Update won't install if an external USB device or SD memory card is attached

Do you know?
Windows 10 May 2019 Update won't install on devices having small storage

According to the Microsoft Support Document, if you have an external USB device or a SD card attached to a system, that device won't get the Windows 10 May 2019 Update. If you try to force installation of the update with an attached USB or SD card, you may receive a message stating "This PC can't be upgraded to Windows 10".

This is due to an issue with inappropriate drive assignment in Windows 10 May 2019 Update, which has been already identified by Microsoft but not yet included to this feature update. Microsoft explained this issue with the following example:

An upgrade to the May 2019 Update is tried on a computer that has a thumb drive inserted into a USB port. Before the upgrade, the device would have been mounted in the system as drive G based on the existing drive configuration. However, after the upgrade, the device is reassigned a different drive letter. For example, the drive is reassigned as drive H.

Microsoft said that the fix will roll out in future with a servicing update. Till that time, if you want to install this big update, you will have to unplug all USB device and SD cards from that system before running installation of this update.
