When you start writing on the new handwriting panel or slate, you’ll see your previous words converted to typed text within that panel. Once you are done, writing on the panel, lift your pen off the screen to shift the text to left so that you can have enough space to continue writing. When you want to insert the entered text and also want to clear the slate, press the commit button.

If you want to change some text, you can select the text while the handwriting panel is open. The selected text will now appear within the panel/slate, so that you can easily make alterations to it.

As it runs on intelligence and everyone has a different style of handwriting, there is a chance of recognizing your writing wrongly. You can simply make corrections within the panel by overwriting the text. You just have to overwrite the misspelled text and the slate will replace it automatically. Microsoft has added four different ink gestures to easily correct the text available on the handwriting panel. The gestures are: strikethrough, scratch, join and split. Try this out on a coverted typed text or by selecting an existing text from your document.

Microsoft also added two new buttons to the handwriting panel, so that you can have easier access to emoji/symbols and easily input them without needing to switch to the touch keyboard. When you want to pick any emoji or symbol, just tap the button to bring the list.

Handwriting panel will by default float next to the place where you are writing, to give you easier access to it. You can change the mode from the keyboard settings. Tap To change it, tap the keyboard settings menu button, present at the top left corner of the keyboard.

Apart from all these, other improvements contains:

  • Changes to US English handwriting recognition engine to improve its accuracy.
  • Improvements to the recognition accuracy of mixed input.
  • Added an English mode button when handwriting in Simplified Chinese.
  • If your PC has pen support, then the handwriting engine for each language should download automatically when you add it to your language list.
